Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonc\u0327a, highlighted, this Tuesday, in Geneva, Switzerland, the actions implemented by the Angolan Executive with a view to mitigating the effects of climate change, which have a negative impact on the country’s development.<\/b><\/p>\n

When speaking at the panel on \u201cThe impact of climate change on human mobility\u201d, within the framework of the 14th World Forum on Migration and Development, taking place in Geneva, Esmeralda Mendonc\u0327a highlighted the Cafu Canal as an integrated and large-scale project in the province of Cunene, representing one of the Government’s responses to the cyclical phenomenon of severe drought that affects populations in the south of the country.<\/p>\n

According to the head of the Angolan delegation to the event, these initiatives are part of the National Strategy for Climate Change (2022 \u2013 2035), aligned with the vision of the African Union’s 2063 and UN 2030 agendas.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, he recalled that Angosat-2, recently launched, within the framework of the National Space Program, will contribute and help to improve the climatological monitoring of meteorological phenomena, as well as in the development of anticipatory policies linked to mobility throughout the country and the region. of Southern Africa.<\/p>\n

For the Angolan diplomat, \u201cthe choice of the topic for this panel was pertinent and opportune for the resumption of the long-awaited World Forum on Migration and Development, shortly after reaching another important milestone within the framework of COP 28. In this sense, Angola salutes France\u2019s leadership in holding this event.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the other hand, he pointed out that “climate changes and risks increase pressure on human mobility and should lead States and other partners to reflect on the constraints and opportunities to take early measures and coordinated actions at all levels, to create paths people-centered adaptation strategies, strengthen community resilience and enable adaptive mobility.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the event, which runs from today until Thursday, at the Geneva International Conference Center, the Angolan delegation will participate in a shared session between government and private sector representatives, organized by the business mechanism, as well as in the award of the \u201cClimate Migrant Prize\u201d, organized by the Climate Vulnerability Forum, and two round tables on environmental migration.<\/p>\n

Likewise, it will participate in several parallel events in which it will address with global partners the need for responses to all types of migration, at the same time as it will publicize the work that the Executive has been doing internally, in light of the country’s immigration policy.<\/p>\n

Created in 2007, the Global Forum on Migration and Development is an informal, non-binding, state-led process that helps shape the global debate on migration and development.<\/p>\n

The event will allow Member States, in partnership with civil society, the private sector, local and regional governments, young people, the United Nations system and other relevant stakeholders, to analyze and discuss sensitive issues, build consensus, present innovative solutions and share policies and good practices on migration and development processes.<\/p>\n

The forum is based on six axes, namely the impact of climate change on human mobility, rights and migration, diasporas as actors in the economic, social and cultural development of territories, labor migration, improving the place of migration in collective mentalities, and governance multilevel.<\/p>\n

The event provides a space for flexible and multilateral dialogue where governments can discuss multidimensional aspects, opportunities and challenges related to migration, development and the link between these two areas.<\/p>\n
