Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Angolan Government will create, this year, a Management Unit for the maintenance and operation of the water transfer system from the Cafu canal to the chanas area, according to the Secretary of State for Water, Manuel Quintino.<\/b><\/p>\n

Inaugurated in April 2022 by the President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, the project has an open-air canal, covering a length of around 165 km, derived from the reservoir in the Cafu section of the Cunene river.<\/p>\n

Speaking this Friday, Manuel Quintino, said that the Management Unit will have a coordinator, technical manager, deputy and technicians trained in hydraulics, electrotechnics, mechanical and hydromechanical technicians and administrative staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe water transfer system completed two years ago, under contract, management, operation and maintenance is still the responsibility of the contractor, specifically the company called Sinohydro Corporation\u201d, he recalled.<\/p>\n

Therefore, he said, the guarantee is three years for the contractor to carry out monitoring and, before ceasing functions, he will transfer knowledge about operation, so the Unit can carry out its mission in 2024.<\/p>\n

“We are here for a three-day mission, which involves technicians from the Ministry of Energy and Water, Agriculture and Forestry and the local government, to prepare the final report that will be presented to higher authorities, for decision making”, he highlighted.<\/p>\n

He said that the group was given one month to complete the report with the proposal of a vision of what the Management Unit will be, reflecting the sustainability aspects of the Cafu works system.<\/p>\n

The minister highlighted that scenarios are also being studied to see the fringe that should be exempt from water consumption rates along the canal, with the medium and large producers that will be covered having already been identified.<\/p>\n

Cafu Structure<\/p>\n

The Cafu water project is the first of a batch of five by the Angolan Government, created within the framework of the structural actions program to combat drought in the region, which will benefit 235 thousand people<\/p>\n

Valued at 44 billion, 358 million and 360 thousand 651 kwanzas, the infrastructure is allowing the watering of 250 thousand animals and the irrigation of five thousand hectares of agricultural fields.<\/p>\n

In the system, metal structures were installed for the suction chamber and water intake area, electrical substation building, with three generator sets with a capacity of one megawatt and a one-dimensional reservoir, in addition to solar panels capable of generating 1.5 megawatts of energy.<\/p>\n

The project includes 30 chimpacas, 100 meters long, 50 meters wide, five to six deep and with a water storage capacity that varies from 25 thousand to 30 thousand cubic meters.<\/p>\n
