Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The company Mineira do Cuango (SMC), which suffered, in 2023, a 40 percent drop in the sales value of diamond production, just over 80% of the forecast, is working on restructuring and resizing costs, to avoid dismissals of workers.<\/b><\/p>\n

The information was provided Wednesday, by the president of the Management Board of SMC, Artur Jorge, highlighting that the low selling price of diamonds on the national and international market caused, in 2023, a loss to the company of more than 20 million US dollars.<\/p>\n

“The drop in the price of diamonds is around 40 percent and this has significantly impacted the company’s revenue, which is why we have been working hard to reduce operational costs and thus avoid the possibility of laying off workers “, he stressed.<\/p>\n

He made it known that, in 2023, 89 percent of production targets were achieved and, for this year, the indicators point towards an increase compared to the previous period.<\/p>\n

Currently, production levels are around 20 thousand carats of rough diamonds per month and an increase of 24 or 25 thousand carats is expected.<\/p>\n

The mine, located in the municipality of Cuango, has a concession area of \u200b\u200bfive thousand square kilometers and employs 788 workers.<\/p>\n

Social responsability<\/p>\n

Artur Jorge, reiterated the company’s commitment to helping the Government minimize some social needs in the municipality of Cuango, building schools, health units, among other actions, within the framework of the company’s social responsibility.<\/p>\n

For example, last year, the operator built a school and two medical stations, to ensure medical and medication assistance, as well as access to education in the district.<\/p>\n

This year, the company will make one school available to the community and rehabilitate another.<\/p>\n

“Within the scope of social responsibility, in recent years the company has built schools, health centers and water holes, as well as distributing grinding mills, motor pumps to support agriculture, as well as small generators, motorbikes and vehicles for some traditional authorities”, he stressed.<\/p>\n

He said a professional training center is under construction, which will soon be handed over to the State’s local administration authorities, with the aim of strengthening the training of young people in different fields.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that one of the purposes of creating the center is to ensure the preparation of graduates to be better inserted into the job market, with a large proportion expected to be hired by Sociedade Mineira do Cuango itself.<\/p>\n
