Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The diplomatic efforts of the President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, focused on promoting and defending peace, increasingly reinforce Angola’s commitment to resolving conflicts, at regional and international level.<\/b><\/p>\nOver the last five years, the Angolan Head of State has implemented an intense diplomatic agenda and organized a series of high-level meetings and conferences, which reinforces the mediation position in the face of current challenges.<\/p>\n
Essentially, positions towards a culture of peace and diplomacy predominate in the search for solutions to the different conflicts that occur on the continent.<\/p>\n
The statesman has highlighted the primacy of permanent dialogue in favor of building a more pacified continent.<\/p>\n
As \u201cChampion of Peace and Reconciliation in Africa\u201d, the President highlighted, in 2023, on the occasion of the first anniversary of Peace and Reconciliation Day on the continent, that \u201cit is only possible to achieve peace and reconciliation with actions aimed at creating the spirit of trust and unity in diversity for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts\u201d.<\/p>\n
In his message, delivered at a virtual session of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), he stated that Africans want to see, in the not too distant future, the continent economically strong and socially stable, which overcomes illiteracy, hunger and poverty, and guarantee employment and well-being for your children.<\/p>\n
As acting president of the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o presided over summits and other activities, some of which were in the national territory.<\/p>\n
At this meeting, dialogue was also focused on the perspective of inclusion and consultation, with a view to achieving lasting peace in the region, in particular, and on the continent, in general.<\/p>\n
Diplomatic initiatives, as well as personal commitment, are notable, with emphasis on mediation in the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, in the search for inclusion and political stability in the Central African Republic (CAR), as well as as well as integration into efforts for lasting peace in Mozambique.<\/p>\n
It was in this context that Mozambique now has a joint force on alert from SADC, acting in coordination with the Mozambican armed forces.<\/p>\n
By way of example, last year, in the Angolan capital, the Quadripartite Summit on peace efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) should be highlighted, which recommended, among other measures, the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all armed groups, especially the M23, as well as the ADF and the FDL, from the occupied territories, as provided for in the Luanda Roadmap of November 23, 2022.<\/p>\n
The meeting also called for the creation of humanitarian corridors to facilitate assistance in the region.<\/p>\n
Also worth mentioning is the holding, in Luanda, of the Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government, aimed at analyzing the political and security situation in the DRC, and the High Level Meeting on the situation in the Central African Republic (CAR).<\/p>\n
Concerned about the situation on the continent, the Champion for Peace and Reconciliation highlighted, in his speech at the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, last September, the continent’s challenges such as the fight against terrorism and the need for financing for the development.<\/p>\n
He stressed that Angola has sought to contribute with its experience, in terms of building peace, harmony and national reconciliation, to the resolution of conflicts that plague the African continent, with special emphasis on what is happening in the DRC, where it believes that it will be able to build a basis of trust between the belligerents, which will contribute to a reduction in tension in the Great Lakes Region and lead to the much-desired peace.<\/p>\n
According to the President, these measures to contain the expansion of terrorism and other destabilization actions involve financial costs that countries are not always able to bear and which, therefore, can compromise the success of pacification operations.<\/p>\n
He argued that it was therefore essential to reaffirm the need for adequate, sustainable and predictable financing for efforts to combat terrorism on the continent, and therefore considered it opportune to renew the appeal to the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, for the use of fixed contributions for peace support operations mandated by the African Union (AU).<\/p>\n
The work carried out by the Angolan statesman led the Diplomatic Corps accredited in the country to encourage the Government to continue its efforts to pacify the conflicting regions, in favor of the stability of the continent.<\/p>\n
The position of the diplomatic corps was expressed by the group’s dean and ambassador of Morocco, Saadia El Alaoui, during the New Year’s Greetings ceremony, highlighting the Head of State’s commitment to stability in Africa.<\/p>\n
For the Diplomatic Corps, Angola has affirmed its commitment to stability in Africa, “in full accordance with the role of President Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o as Champion of Peace and Reconciliation, designated by the African Union.”<\/p>\n
From an international perspective, the approaches cover issues related to various parts of the world, with emphasis on Europe and the Middle East, as well as aspects linked to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n
On this matter, the President of the Republic reaffirmed, at the opening of the III Luanda Biennale, last November, that the end of the conflict in the Middle East involves the creation of the Palestinian State.<\/p>\n
He argued that the war between Israel and Hamas has only one possible solution, which is necessarily based on the creation of the Palestinian State, having reinforced that this assumption is highlighted in the various United Nations Security Council resolutions on the matter.<\/p>\n
As for Russia and Ukraine, he considered that the conflict, as a whole or even in isolation, constitutes a serious and unequivocal threat to international security and world peace.<\/p>\n
He pointed out as proof the consequences that derive from this in its human, social, economic and political dimension.<\/p>\n
