Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Cyber Security Authority (CSA), in its latest Valentine\u2019s Day scam alert to the public, has revealed that a whooping GH\u00a23,558,940 was lost through \u201conline shopping and romance scams\u201d in 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n

Valentine\u2019s Day is a day on which individuals express their love and affection for one another by giving presents or things bearing romantic sentiments.<\/p>\n

The Cyber Security Authority has therefore cautioned the public to exercise restraint and due diligence in their online activities, especially on Valentine\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n

According to the CSA, malicious persons create fake websites, online shops or<\/p>\n

impersonate existing businesses on social media, offering heavily discounted packages and items.<\/p>\n

Victims are enticed to send money for these items, which they never receive or receive in substandard forms.<\/p>\n

Also, as regards romance scams, the Authority explained that \u201cmalicious actors create fake online profiles to deceive victims into believing they are engaging in a trusting relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey use the relationship to persuade the victims to send money, provide personal and financial information, or purchase items for them,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

Moreover, those who engage in phishing scams send unsolicited emails or messages claiming to be from a romantic partner or a company offering Valentine\u2019s Day deals.<\/p>\n

CSA noted that such messages contain links or attachments that, when clicked, install malicious software (malware) or steal personal information.<\/p>\n

The Authority therefore recommended that people be cautious of \u201ctoo good to be true\u201d deals on Valentine\u2019s Day packages or gifts.<\/p>\n

It encouraged the public to use a reputable online marketplace or retailer when purchasing Valentine\u2019s Day gifts. It also urged online shoppers to \u201clook for reviews and customer feedback before making an online purchase.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile search engines provide convenient access to information, they can also display manipulated or misleading results. Check on the official websites or with reliable sources to validate the contact details of shops rather than relying solely on search engine results,\u201d the Authority stated.<\/p>\n
