Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The MPLA argues that each of the 220 deputies to the National Assembly (AN) must gain awareness of their representative function and institutional responsibility. This statement was recently expressed in a political declaration by the ruling party, on the sidelines of the 3rd Ordinary Plenary Meeting of the 2nd Legislative Session of the V Legislature of the National Assembly.<\/b><\/p>\n

For the MPLA, parliamentarians must understand that the most important judgment of actions will not be the prospect of the citizen’s vote in the next elections, but the examination of conscience that each one “will make when they stop being a deputy and, therefore, become be merely represented.\u201d As representatives of the people, the party added, the mandate must serve as an example of civility for present and future generations.<\/p>\n

“The time has come to decide whether we want to continue the process of building and consolidating democracy and the rule of law or whether, as in the past, the hidden agenda of obstructing institutions remains”, said the former president of the Parliamentary Group of the MPLA, Virgi\u0301lio de Fontes Pereira, during the reading of the political declaration.<\/p>\n

The deputy also criticized the position of some colleagues, particularly the opposition, saying that they transform the AN into a stage for \u201cirresponsible\u201d political activism, where discussions of projects and proposed laws are used as an opportunity for \u201cinsult\u201d.<\/p>\n

In this context, he pointed out, for example, the plenary meetings, which, according to him, have also served to radicalize the discourse, as a faster means of promotion within the party ranks.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Virgi\u0301lio de Fontes Pereira said that the television broadcast of the sessions “is used to exacerbate the disregard and trivialization of institutions, in a populist attitude\u201d.<\/p>\n

“We feel that they refrain from making a responsible opposition and going down in history as a participant in the construction of the new Angola. They prefer to continue presenting shows and providing entertainment”, he lamented, adding that the MPLA, despite the mistakes it makes and admits, works ” tirelessly\u201d for the country\u2019s development.<\/p>\n

Virgi\u0301lio de Fontes Pereira also highlighted that “never” in the History of Angola “has the role of the National Assembly as a sovereign body, representative of Angolans, been as relevant as now.”<\/p>\n
