Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Training is one of the pillars for improving press freedom and all the work carried out by the media, declared this Friday, in Luanda, the Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Ma\u0301rio Oliveira.<\/b><\/p>\n

The government official was speaking at the end of a meeting with students from the Social Communication and Portuguese Language and Literature courses at Agostinho Neto University, organized on the occasion of Press Freedom Day (May 3).<\/p>\n

He highlighted the investment made in the Journalist Training Centers (CEFOJOR) in Luanda and Huambo, aiming to improve the quality of journalists and those aspiring to the profession.<\/p>\n

Regarding today’s date, the minister highlighted the importance of the role of social communication as a vehicle for training and information, serving to clarify various aspects in society by making each individual move in the right direction.<\/p>\n

Ma\u0301rio Oliveira also greeted all Social Communication professionals and hoped that everyone would take advantage of the day to reflect on what the activity has been like in general and the exercise of press freedom in particular.<\/p>\n

In the meeting marked by an open dialogue with the students, the Executive’s public policies aimed at promoting an environment favorable to the good exercise of the multiple disciplines of Social Communication were mentioned.<\/p>\n

The students pointed out the problems of the lack of professional internships, the lack of more specialties in the social communication course at the university, the lack of books in college libraries and others.<\/p>\n

Regarding the lack of internships, the minister highlighted that the practice does not start in companies, universities also have an obligation to create conditions so that students can develop their skills.<\/p>\n

He considered that the internship does not begin in the fifth year, because what is commonly called practical classes is an internship, although students often do not see it as such.<\/p>\n

In the item related to the lack of specialty, he mentioned that he did not know the program of the Social Communication course at the Agostinho Neto University, believing that the management must have reasons for the lack of specialty, advising students not to study at the university, they can add value with training at CEFOJOR.<\/p>\n

Regarding libraries, he clarified that it was an issue that the Associations together with the university management had to resolve. “I can advocate here with my colleague, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, but in principle, joint work between the Association and universities must be done to find better ways for libraries and their equipment”, he concluded.<\/p>\n

Angola rose 21 places in the 2024 press freedom ranking, prepared by the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF).<\/p>\n

The date was created on December 20, 1993, with a decision by the United Nations General Assembly, and celebrates Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and marks Windhoek Declaration Day.<\/p>\n
