Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The permanent representatives of the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), accredited at the United Nations, in New York, analyzed this Tuesday, the results of the last Summit of the Double Troika and the latest developments in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).<\/b><\/p>\n

According to a press release, the meeting, chaired by the Angolan ambassador, Francisco Jose\u0301 da Cruz, acting president of the group, also served to address the situation in the eastern part of the DRC and in Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique.<\/p>\n

On the occasion, diplomats were also informed about the progress of SADC missions, namely, SAMIDRC and SAMIM, deployed to support the governments of DRC and Mozambique in restoring peace, security and stability to pave the way for sustainable development.<\/p>\n

When addressing those present, Francisco Jose\u0301 da Cruz highlighted the importance of the Group’s monthly meeting, which serves as a platform for exchanging views on issues of mutual interest, discussing ongoing processes and outlining strategies on future commitments to better promote the SADC interests in the United Nations.<\/p>\n

In this perspective, the ambassadors of the SADC countries took advantage of the occasion to address other topics of common interest, such as the Future Summit and the Global Digital Compact.<\/p>\n

The Future Summit is a high-level event that brings together world leaders to establish a new international consensus on how to improve the present and safeguard the future.<\/p>\n

A unique opportunity to rebuild weakened trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively face current challenges, as well as past and future ones.<\/p>\n

Scheduled for September 22nd and 23rd, 2024, the high-level event will bring together world leaders to establish a new international consensus on how to improve the present and safeguard the future.<\/p>\n

Regarding the Global Digital Compact, the ambassadors discussed the objectives of the event, and outlined strategies for SADC’s participation.<\/p>\n

The Global Digital Compact (GDC) was proposed in the United Nations Secretary-General’s Common Agenda report to outline shared principles for \u201can open, free and secure digital future for all\u201d.<\/p>\n

These principles will be presented to heads of state and government through the Future Compact during the high-level Future Summit, which will take place on 22-23 September 2024.<\/p>\n

The Common Agenda report proposes challenges for consideration, including digital connectivity, Internet fragmentation, data protection, human rights online and promoting a trustworthy Internet.<\/p>\n

Another topic that received the attention of SADC diplomats was the United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation.<\/p>\n

This is a proposed new legal instrument aimed at better coordinating international tax policy.<\/p>\n

Championed by developing countries, a United Nations Framework Convention aims to make international tax cooperation fully inclusive and more effective.<\/p>\n
