Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Energy and Water, Joa\u0303o Baptista Borges, reiterated, this Friday, in the municipality of Matala, Hui\u0301la province, the government’s commitment to combating the effects of drought and managing water resources.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking at the inauguration of the Matala Hydroelectric Plant, the government official stated that, in a reality where it is necessary to deal with climate change and its effects, there is an urgent need to significantly increase the availability of water in Hui\u0301la, to serve a population more than two million inhabitants.<\/p>\n

Therefore, he said, the construction of a new reservoir or dams is planned in the middle course of the Cunene River, to regularize the channels, so that it is capable of mitigating the effects of the drought.<\/p>\n

Given the scenario, he considered the construction of the Bayne Hydroelectric Plant to be urgent.<\/p>\n

He recalled that, within the scope of the drought combat program, priority fell on the province of Cunene where the Cafu Canal was built and, next year, the Ndue\u0301, Calucuve and Cova do Lea\u0303o dams will be completed.<\/p>\n

As for the province of Hui\u0301la, the priority is the municipality of Gambos, and for Namibe the construction of six dams is planned, in addition to small water projects, which should start soon.<\/p>\n
