Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Verde’s ambassador to Angola, Ju\u0301lio Morais, is satisfied with the good integration of the Cape Verdean community in the province of Benguela and in the country, in general, thanks to the welcome shown by the Angolan authorities.<\/b><\/p>\n

The diplomat is, for the second time, in the province of Benguela, to celebrate the 49th anniversary of the National Independence of Cape Verde, marked on the 5th of July, with the Cape Verdean community.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the press, the ambassador, who completes a year in office on the 19th, highlights that the Cape Verdean community in Angola \u2013 made up of more than 30 thousand citizens \u2013 is quite old, already in its fourth generation.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust to give a very illustrative example of the Cape Verdean presence in Angola: the first birth certificate, in this case, of a Cape Verdean daughter dates back to 1899, in Benguela\u201d, he adds.<\/p>\n

He made a point of remembering that the Cape Verdean community residing in Benguela is the oldest in Angola, as it was the first place where Cape Verdeans began to concentrate in colonial times.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven the national hero, Ami\u0301lcar Cabral, came by, designed and prepared the irrigation plan for the entire Catumbela hydrographic basin, especially for sugarcane plantations\u201d, he noted.<\/p>\n

The diplomat praised the fact that the Cape Verdean community is very well integrated, adding that, sometimes, even the Embassy and Consular Services find it difficult to distinguish Cape Verdean from Angolan.<\/p>\n

For Ju\u0301lio Morais, more important than being born in Angola and having Cape Verdean roots, is being an agent of development for both countries and brotherly peoples.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a pleasure to see that the Cape Verdean community in Angola does not have any major problems in terms of integration\u201d, he reinforced.<\/p>\n

It is within this framework that the Embassy of Cape Verde in Angola has been multiplying initiatives and measures, for better integration of communities spread across the country.<\/p>\n

Adherence to nationality<\/p>\n

Regarding the extraordinary campaign to grant nationality to the second generation of Cape Verdeans, open since 2023, the ambassador said the results were positive, given the influx of thousands of new candidates.<\/p>\n

Ju\u0301lio Morais announced that the good news of the process is the extension, two weeks ago, of the Law granting nationality to the second to the third generation of Cape Verdeans, which will generate a greater flow of services.<\/p>\n

That’s why he revealed that he was thinking about asking for reinforcements, including at the Cape Verde consular post in Benguela, because, as the diplomat recognizes, there are still very few staff.<\/p>\n

Difficulties<\/p>\n

Among the difficulties the community goes through is document regularization to obtain nationality, such as the birth certificate – or that of the father or grandfather -, as they are descendants of Cape Verdeans.<\/p>\n

To overcome these difficulties, he stated that the Embassy has used Cape Verdean historical archives, including churches, to locate all birth records made by hand, at that time, and which elect the candidate for Cape Verdean citizenship.<\/p>\n

Although it takes time, the ambassador emphasizes that it has been possible to find the data of nationality applicants, although this sometimes involves the involvement of the families themselves in Cape Verde.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, he thanked the Angolan authorities for their openness and fraternity in welcoming the Cape Verdean community in Benguela and throughout the country.<\/p>\n

This Saturday, the ambassador of Cape Verde will mark the date of his country’s independence with the Cape Verdean community in Benguela, with a dinner, where there will be typical music from the archipelago, such as morna, coladeira and funana\u0301.<\/p>\n
