Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Politics is a game and, as in any game or competition, only the teams whose players or athletes submit to the organization and discipline of the collective and respect the rules of the game and the guidance of the technical team win.<\/b><\/p>\nNo one starts the game without hearing the referee’s whistle, no one starts the athletics race without hearing the starting shot, under penalty of being disqualified and harming the team”, said the president of the MPLA, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, during the opening of the 3rd extraordinary session of the Central Committee held in Luanda, last Wednesday, the 9th of this month.<\/p>\n
Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o left a clear message for the party’s presidential candidates and their supporters. Politicians often resort to sports to explain internal situations in their parties and even in the country. In this whole analogy, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o did not make it clear what his role\/position is in this competition. Is he a referee? A player? The owner of the ball? Or the ball boy? If he is the referee, it means he is no longer a player, and if he is a player, he is automatically no longer a referee. What is certain is that he cannot be a referee and a player at the same time, unless he changes the rules of the game. And what about while the game is still underway?<\/p>\n
Nowadays, the referee is no longer the only one in charge of the game; there is now also the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), who plays a fundamental role in deciding the plays. It is important for his other teammates that Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o does not become that well-known figure from our childhood, the one who owns the ball. The one who, because he owns the ball, thinks he cannot be substituted, that all his teammates have to pass the ball to him in order to score goals and that when they ask him to come off, he takes the ball away from him and the game ends. He also has every legitimacy and authority to demand some respect for the rules of the game and that he not be made a ball boy.<\/p>\n
It is true that the rules of the game cannot be changed while the game is still underway. And there are no games without substitutions. The truth is that substitutions cannot be cancelled; the tendency has been to increase the number of them. I agree with Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o when he talks about the need to respect the organisation, discipline, rules of the game and the guidance of the coaching staff. Teams, parties and institutions cannot be subject to the whims of the coaches on the sidelines. When they are on the sidelines, everyone thinks they are capable of solving problems on the pitch, and from the sidelines, everyone has solutions.<\/p>\n
Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o also spoke about athletics, and so far he needs to clarify to his comrades whether they are in a sprint event or a long-distance race. If it is a sprint event, the idea of \u200b\u200bthe militants is that the MPLA is in a relay race, in which each runner has a defined route and, at a certain point, has to pass the baton to another teammate. In the relay, the rules are clear and the timing of the baton handover is fundamental to the success of the entire team.<\/p>\n
Runners who fail to hand over their baton on time will fall, be disqualified and harm the entire team. In long-distance races, the figure of the hare is very common. Hares are athletes hired by the organization to dictate the pace of a given race and for a certain distance. They set a strong, pre-planned pace that leads the other competitors to a desired record.<\/p>\n
What we have in the MPLA are some “hares” trying to mark the pace and force the real ones to come out of their holes. In athletics, the referee also has a timing to give the starting shot, and the race cannot depend on the referee’s will to fire or not. The MPLA’s finish line with the inscription “December 2026” is already clearly visible and the race is entering the decisive phase.<\/p>\n
Rotation and alternation are essential elements of democracy and are part of the finite nature of power. This is a reality that MPLA militants are mastering, at a time when the issue of multiple candidacies and succession is gaining more and more traction. While more conservative sectors of the MPLA believe that a single candidacy conveys an image of unity and internal cohesion, there are broader sectors that argue that the issue of multiple candidacies can convey a sign of greater openness and democratization within the MPLA. And it is this latter approach that Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o must show that he is prepared to deal with, he must position himself and clarify his position, and be the helmsman of true internal change. There are two things that Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o must be prepared to do: know how to negotiate and know how to give in. And there are two things that the “sacred cows” of the MPLA must understand: they cannot see Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o as just part of the problem; they must also see and deal with him as part of the solution. All of this for the good of the MPLA and the country.<\/p>\n
