Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The European Union (EU) reiterated its interest in increasingly improving the capabilities of Angolan institutions in combating corruption and recovering assets illegally taken from the country.<\/b><\/p>\n

The guarantee was given on Monday by the European bloc’s Press and Information officer in Angola.<\/p>\n

Pablo Mazarrasa was reacting to recent statements by the Inspector General of State Administration, Joa\u0303o Pinto, about the lack of collaboration on the part of European Union countries in the fight against corruption and the recovery of assets illegally transferred abroad, during the 9th General Assembly of the Forum of Inspectors General of African States and Similar Institutions (FIGE).<\/p>\n

According to the EU official, the recovery of assets, as well as the exchange of information between judicial bodies, is a matter of a sovereign nature, where Angola, for example, has the power to deal with each country involved.<\/p>\n

“This is not a matter that falls within the EU’s competence, although we are committed to improving the capabilities of Angolan institutions in the fight against corruption and asset recovery”, said Pablo Mazarrasa, stressing that the Pro-React project, implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which aims to develop an effective system to combat illicit financial flows, is a practical example of the actions carried out by the international community, including the European Union.<\/p>\n

IGAE inspector expects more from the European Union<\/p>\n

During the Forum, the Inspector General of State Administration, Joa\u0303o Pinto, expressed some disenchantment with the stance of European Union (EU) countries in relation to cooperation with Angolan institutions in the fight against corruption and recovery of assets illegally transferred to many of these States.<\/p>\n

According to Joa\u0303o Pinto, despite the excellent diplomatic relations with Angola, EU countries have not facilitated the return of fraudulent goods or the exchange of information on the subject.<\/p>\n

During the 9th Assembly of the Forum of General Inspectors of African States and Similar Institutions (FIGE), held in Luanda, Joa\u0303o Pinto praised the stance of the United Kingdom, the only European country that has collaborated so far with Angolan entities, returning the 500 million dollars diverted from the National Bank of Angola (BNA).<\/p>\n

\u201cI am outraged that our EU partners show no interest in sharing information about illicit assets originating from Angola and installed in their Member States,\u201d said inspector Joa\u0303o Pinto, also president of FIGE for the 2024-2026 biennium.<\/p>\n

Joa\u0303o Pinto’s criticisms were corroborated by the Inspector General of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jules Angete Nkey, who said that his country was facing similar difficulties with the countries of the European Union, which have been domiciling millions of sums illicitly taken from the DRC in their territories.<\/p>\n

The official said that although European countries demand detailed information on the use of funds they sponsor in Africa, they respond with \u201cdiplomatic silence\u201d when the request comes from African governments.<\/p>\n

Asked about the issue, EU representative Fiorito Biagio, who took part in the debate, said that the exchange of information on illicit assets remains an area of \u200b\u200bdivergence between the blocs.<\/p>\n

Mechanisms for sharing information<\/p>\n

Paulo Alves, Director of the IGAE Office and Exchange, stressed that Angola will continue to work with international partners to promote the sharing of information on illicit assets. He highlighted the country’s efforts to create legal and institutional mechanisms to discourage corruption and raise awareness among public managers about ethical practices.<\/p>\n

FIGE Executive Secretary Hassan Issa Sultan advocated African cooperation based on information exchange and institutional consolidation, with a view to strengthening good governance and repressing financial crimes.<\/p>\n

The 9th General Assembly and 11th International Colloquium of FIGE, which took place in the Angolan capital from 22 to 25 October, brought together African inspection authorities under the motto \u201cThe Fight Against Corruption and Money Laundering \u2014 Investigation, Reprimand and Cooperation\u201d.<\/p>\n
