Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) welcomes the cooperation efforts of the Department of Global Communications (DGC) in Angola to operationalize the United Nations Information Center in Luanda in response to the needs of African-speaking Countries Portuguese Official (PALOP).<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of the CPLP, Ambassador Maria de Jesus Ferreira, permanent representative of the Angolan Mission to the UN, reaffirmed, on Tuesday, in New York, the community’s commitment to continue working tirelessly and in the spirit of cooperation and multilateralism. to advance the efforts of the Information Committee and the United Nations, in accordance with the objectives and principles enshrined in the Charter.<\/p>\n

In a press release to which Jornal de Angola had access today, around the work of the 44th Session of the Information Committee, which began Tuesday at the UN headquarters, the Permanent Mission recalls that, in its activities, the DGC (abbreviation in English) should continue to use a combination of online-based media and traditional media, such as television, print and radio, available in many homes in developing countries where there is still limited access to the Internet.<\/p>\n

On the occasion of the celebration of the World Portuguese Language Day, which is celebrated on 5 May, Ambassador Maria de Jesus Ferreira stressed that the CPLP promotes the use of the Portuguese language in the national and international context and, in doing so, contributes to strengthening the multilingualism with the aim of reaffirming the importance of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue.<\/p>\n

He highlighted the use of the latter as facilitators to project the world on the path of sustainable development, peace and security, with a special focus on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.<\/p>\n

The ambassador said that the dissemination and promotion of the UN message, in addition to the six official languages \u200b\u200bof the United Nations, reinforce the importance of effectively informing a broad public, while at the same time reflecting respect for multilingualism and cultural diversity in the world.<\/p>\n

He reiterated the CPLP’s support for the DGC’s desire to reform, especially in the current context, by ensuring greater reach to wider audiences in many places, including the dissemination of reliable information and on global crises in languages \u200b\u200bthat people understand.<\/p>\n

The Session, which runs until the 13th of this month, includes, in addition to the general debate, interactive panels and analysis of the Secretary-General’s reports on the activities of the Department of Global Communications, namely, strategic communication services, news services and dissemination and knowledge.<\/p>\n

In the opening speech, the Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, Melissa Fleming, said that the meeting is of particular importance as it coincides with the commemoration of the Freedom of the Press Day that, despite the advances made, “journalism still suffers from serious threats\u201d.<\/p>\n

The UN Information Committee is a subsidiary body of the General Assembly, established to deal with matters relating to public information. He is responsible for overseeing the work of the DGC and for providing guidance on the Department’s policies, programs and activities.<\/p>\n
