Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The adaptation of ten rice varieties in soils in Cuanza-Norte province, the result of tests carried out in the last four months at the Quilombo Agricultural Station, is being pointed out as a solution for the regular production of the cereal in northern Angola.<\/b><\/p>\n

The person in charge of the initiative, C\u00e9lcio Luamba, informed that the soils of the North region have the same physicochemical characteristics, a fact that, in his opinion, can facilitate the positive adaptation of locally tested seed, at low cost and without resorting to permanent irrigation.<\/p>\n

According to the agronomist, the rice species tested include Nerica-1, L-19, Wab-189, Lilewa-7, Nvuazi, IR12, N-255 and 4,850, Fofifa and Teste, varieties from Brazil, India, Mozambique , the last of which is of national origin. For each variety, 40 grams were tested, allowing the harvest of two kilograms in each one, generating a total harvest of more than 20 kilograms. “The seeds germinated without resorting to any soil correction technique or any form of fertilization”, he said, noting that, during the four months of sowing, the plants were only watered with rainwater.<\/p>\n

C\u00e9lcio Luamba stressed that, during his stay in some European countries, where he graduated, he never obtained results as satisfactory as those obtained in the Quilombo trials, regarding rice production. “Angola is a blessed country, in terms of soils and rainfall, and we don’t need a lot of technology or additives, for food production,” he noted.<\/p>\n

The need to expand the trials in the next rainy season, in order to ensure that other parts of Angola can use locally created rice for cultivation, was expressed by the agronomist, as he believes that his experience can help in the production of the rice in scale, lowering import levels and ensuring more employment for youth in rural areas.<\/p>\n

“Our biggest headache is related to the lack of electricity, since, if resolved, we can expand the testing areas and experiment with other agricultural varieties, to guarantee the use of seeds that are adaptable to our soils and acquire them at low cost\u201d, he concluded.<\/p>\n

The province of Cuanza-Norte has six irrigated perimeters, with particular emphasis on those of Luinga and Mussabo, where, until the mid-1980s, rice was grown, a product already exported to Europe and America.<\/p>\n
