Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The health authorities of the municipality of Buco-Zau intensified, in recent days, actions to raise awareness among the population about the use of mosquito nets, in order to avoid an increase in malaria cases, informed the municipal secretary of Health, Jo\u00e3o Capita.<\/b><\/p>\n

In that locality that is located right in the heart of the Maiombe forest, 120 kilometers north of the city of Cabinda, Jo\u00e3o Capita did not indicate the number of registered cases, limiting himself to saying that “the situation is worrying and requires urgent health education actions, with the aim of instructing the population on how to protect themselves from mosquitoes, the main vectors of endemic diseases, in order to reverse the current situation”.<\/p>\n

“The malaria situation in the municipality of Buco-Zau is worrying and we only have two alternatives to reverse the situation” warned Jo\u00e3o Capita, stressing that the first alternative is a preventive measure that involves combating the outbreaks of the disease and the second in the strict use of mosquito nets.He underlined that awareness-raising actions rely on the involvement of traditional and religious authorities, with the main target being children and pregnant women.<\/p>\n

The official emphasized that the intensification of educational activities within the communities is having positive effects in reducing cases of endemic diseases.<\/p>\n

“With the work we are carrying out , the reduction in cases of malaria and other endemic diseases in the municipality is evident, especially in children aged 0 to 5 years and pregnant women who are the most vulnerable groups”, he said. Jo\u00e3o Capita also referred that, in addition to awareness-raising actions in the communities, the sector has carried out the fumigation process, intra and extra-domestic, with the aim of destroying the outbreaks of vectors transmitting the disease.<\/p>\n

Jo\u00e3o Capita also informed that the health authorities of the municipality are concerned with the exponential emergence of cases of dengue and chikungunya, diseases that, according to the official, result, above all, from the consumption of untreated water. The local health network has 11 fully functioning health units, with emphasis on the Hospital Regional Norte, Alzira da Fonseca, which also provides specialized medical care to citizens of the neighboring municipality of Belize.<\/p>\n
