Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The north-eastern Province of Lunda-Norte has seen growth in clean energy production (dams and photovoltaic plants) over the past five years, allowing for increased population access to this service.<\/b><\/p>\nUntil 2016, clean energy production capacity was 8 megawatts, generated by the Luachimo dam, but after rehabilitation and expansion work in 2017, it reopened in 2024 with a capacity of 34.8 megawatts.<\/p>\n
The project cost $212 mln, financed through a line of credit from China, and involved rehabilitating mechanical equipment, installing a new hydraulic circuit, and building a new 60-kilovolt substation.<\/p>\n
An additional investment of US$40 mln was made to rehabilitate the 85-kilometer high-voltage transmission line to the mining town of Nzagi, in the municipality of Cambulo.<\/p>\n
Currently, the province saw the launch of another clean energy production project, the Lucapa photovoltaic park, with a production capacity of 7.19 megawatts, initially benefiting more than 40,000 families in the region.<\/p>\n
With the inauguration of the project, which involved an investment of just over \u20ac19.7 million the Angolan state will save approximately \u20ac986 billion per year in fuel costs.<\/p>\n
The province produces 43.19 megawatts of clean energy through the Luachimo dam and the Lucapa photovoltaic plant.<\/p>\n
Overall, Lunda-Norte has 83.19 megawatts of electricity available, 7.19 of which are produced at the Lucapa photovoltaic plant, 34.8 at the Luachimo dam, and 42 at the Dundo thermal power plants.<\/p>\n
These investments have boosted the industry, enabling the establishment of 336 fully operational companies in the municipalities of Cambulo, Caungula, Cuango, Cuilo, Chitato, Capenda-Camulemba, Lucapa, and Xa\u0301-Muteba.<\/p>\n
Ongoing and Portfolio Projects<\/b><\/p>\n
In addition to Lucapa, three more photovoltaic plants are underway in the municipalities of Cafunfo (41 megawatts), Cambulo (38.6 MW), and Cuango (26 MW). The projects are part of the rural electrification program, which includes a total of 15 solar power plants in the same number of locations in the province.<\/p>\n
With the completion of these projects, Lunda-Norte will produce a total of 146.79 megawatts of energy from clean sources, increasing population access to the product at affordable prices.<\/p>\n
In 2026, the Executive plans to begin the Eastern Region Electricity System Interconnection project, which encompasses the provinces of Lunda-Norte, Lunda-Sul, Moxico, and Moxico-Leste, with an estimated investment of over \u20ac800 mln.<\/p>\n
To this end, according to data from the Ministry of Energy and Water, environmental and social impact studies are already underway by the contractor, which should be submitted to the Ministry of Finance, for approval.<\/p>\n
A line of over 500 kilometers will be constructed, supported by four electrical substations in the municipalities of Dundo (Lunda-Norte), Saurimo (Lunda-Sul), Kamanongue (Moxico), Luau, and Cazombo (Moxico-Leste), with a voltage level of 400\/220\/60\/110 kV, respectively.<\/p>\n
Also in 2026, the interconnection of the North and East electrical systems is scheduled to begin, with a voltage level of 400 kV, from the province of Malanje, passing through Xa\u0301-muteba and Saurimo.<\/p>\n
According to the supervising ministry, the implementation of both projects goes from 2026 to 2029.<\/p>\n
The province of Lunda-Norte, with an estimated population of 1,150,000 inhabitants, distributed among 19 municipalities (Dundo, Chitato, Mussungue, Capenda-Camulemba, Cambulo, Caungula, Cuango, Cuilo, Lo\u0301vua, Lubalo, Lucapa, Xa\u0301-Muteba, Canzar, Xa\u0301cassau, Luremo, Cafunfu, Camaxilo, Cassanje Calucala and Luangue).<\/p>\n
