Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Head of State, Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o, called this Monday, for Friday, the fourth ordinary meeting of the Council of the Republic, with the purpose of consulting that body on the date of the general elections, says a note from the Civil House sent to the essays.<\/b><\/p>\n

According to the Organic Law on General Elections, it is incumbent upon the President of the Republic to convene and set the date for the general elections, after hearing the National Electoral Commission and the Council of the Republic.<\/p>\n

The Council of the Republic comprises the Vice-President of the Republic, the Presidents of the National Assembly and the Constitutional Court, as well as the Attorney General of the Republic. The presidents of political parties and coalitions of political parties represented in the National Assembly and other entities are also members of that body.<\/p>\n

The Head of State announced last week that he would call the general elections, scheduled for the month of August, after the meeting of the Council of the Republic.<\/p>\n

The information was released to the press at the end of the inauguration of the new premises of the National Electoral Commission (CNE). “Stay tuned. From the moment the Council of the Republic meets, it is possible that, hours or days later, elections will be called”, assured President Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o.<\/p>\n

Regarding the accusation raised a few days ago by the largest opposition party, according to which it is delaying the convening of general elections, the President of the Republic recalled that the Constitution and the law determine that they be convened within 90 days before the end of the current mandate, whose investiture took place on 26 September. “So it’s a matter of doing the math. I’m within the deadlines. I can stretch them to the maximum, but I won’t. As soon as the Council of the Republic meeting takes place, I’ll call the elections”, he reinforced.<\/p>\n

The Head of State appealed to the Angolan people, especially political leaders, for the need to remember that the dispute for elections must be carried out within certain rules and civility, so that, in the end, the best person wins. “Elections are a game, but also a fight, in a good way, where there should be no injuries. And, in the end, this fight will end up becoming a party for all Angolans, especially for the main actors who, in The principle is political parties and coalitions”, stressed the President, for whom the holding of elections is always a moment of great challenge, but which should not necessarily mean instability.<\/p>\n

He added that now that the CNE has considered that the President of the Republic is in a position to call the elections, there is, even so, a set of acts that will take place until the elections are held.<\/p>\n
