Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Head of State, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, awarded this Thursday (6) in Luanda, the commemorative medal of honor for the 50th anniversary of National Independence to the former Head of State, Jose\u0301 Eduardo dos Santos, and to several foreign personalities who contributed to the liberation, peace and development of Angola.<\/b><\/p>\n

Among those decorated in the Honor Category, in addition to former President Jose\u0301 Eduardo dos Santos, are African, European, Asian and American leaders who stood out for their solidarity and diplomatic role during the national liberation struggle and in the post-independence reconstruction process.<\/p>\n

Nelson Mandela from South Africa, Fidel Castro from Cuba, Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana), Julius Nyerere (Tanzania), Josip Broz Tito (former Yugoslavia), Bill Clinton (USA), Ani\u0301bal Cavaco Silva (Portugal), Xi Jinping (China), Denis Sassou Nguesso (Congo), Pope Paul VI (Vatican City), as well as Ernesto Geisel (Brazil), among others, includes the listo f honorees.<\/p>\n

Regarding the Independence Category, medals will be awarded to figures who directly participated in the liberation struggle and the Alvor Agreement, such as Anto\u0301nio Agostinho Neto, A\u0301lvaro Holden Roberto, and Jonas Malheiro Savimbi, in addition to Angolan nationalists, diplomats and combatants, as well as foreigners.<\/p>\n

In the Peace and Development Category, individuals and institutions that have contributed to national reconciliation and development in Angola over the past decades will be honored.<\/p>\n

Among them are Anto\u0302nio Domingos Pitra Neto, for his contribution to strengthening democratic institutions; Dom Gabriel Mbilingi, for promoting dialogue and peace; and Frederico Manuel dos Santos e Silva Cardoso, for his role in political reforms, Soraya da Piedade, for encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation, Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations and Margareth Anstee, former United Nations (UN) representative in Angola, whose work was decisive in the peace process and national reconstruction.<\/p>\n

These distinctions, which in this eighth phase encompass 188 personalities, represent a gesture of recognition and gratitude from the Angolan nation to all those who, inside and outside the country, fought for the freedom, peace, and dignity of the Angolan people.<\/p>\n

Since the beginning of the process in April 2025, the awards program has already recognized 4,508 personalities, both national and foreign, in seven previous phases.<\/p>\n
