Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic of the Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, on Tuesday in Luanda was awarded the Commemorative Medal of the 50th Anniversary of National Independence in the Honour category, in recognition of his contribution and solidarity in achieving Angola’s sovereignty.<\/b><\/p>\n

The distinction was made by the Angolan Head of State, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, in the Protocol Hall, after the main event of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of National Independence, held in the Republic Square, in the capital.<\/p>\n

The awarding of a medal to Denis Sassou Nguesso symbolizes the recognition by the Angolan people of the historical role played by Congo in supporting the Angolan national liberation struggle, as well as in consolidating peace and stability in the Central African region.<\/p>\n

During the event, President Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o spoke of the historical importance of Operation Carlota, which marked the arrival of the first Cuban contingent in Angola at a decisive moment for the proclamation of independence on November 11, 1975.<\/p>\n

He explained that the logistical and military support, coming from the then Soviet Union and transported by sea and air through Pointe-Noire, in the Republic of the Congo, was fundamental to the victories in the battles of Nto\u0301, in the province of Cabinda, and Kifangondo, in Luanda, where the country’s independence was consolidated.<\/p>\n

The president also emphasized that, at that time, the President of the Republic of Congo was Marien Ngouabi, while Denis Sassou Nguesso was Defence Minister, having been responsible for coordinating the passage of Cuban troops and weapons through Congolese territory, in close liaison with General Iko Carreira, the then military chief of the People’s Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola (FAPLA) and subsequently, Minister of Defence of Angola.<\/p>\n

Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o considers this support a gesture of courage and solidarity that highlights the historical contribution of Denis Sassou Nguesso, whose relationship with Angola goes beyond his role as mediator in the Brazzaville peace talks, revealing itself from the very beginnings of the liberation struggle.<\/p>\n

In turn, Denis Sassou Nguesso expressed the profound meaning of the tribute, emphasizing that Angola’s independence was the result of enormous dedication and resilience from the Angolan people.<\/p>\n

He considered it a memorable day, not only for Angola, but for the entire African continent, as it demonstrates the country’s role as a reference in the struggle for liberation and development in Africa.<\/p>\n

The Congolese Head of State expressed gratitude for the distinction, which refers not only to himself but also to the contribution of the Republic of Congo, as well as the Congolese people, to the cause of Angola’s independence.<\/p>\n

He reaffirmed the bonds of trust and cooperation between the two countries, expressing his wish that the fiftieth anniversary celebrations would strengthen the friendship and solidarity between Angola, Congo, and all of Africa.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was witnessed by both national and international guests. It symbolized gratitude and brotherhood between Angola and the Republic of the Congo, reaffirming a historical relationship built on solidarity, cooperation and mutual support.<\/p>\n
