Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, returned to Luanda on the afternoon of Wednesday (15), after a working visit of a few hours to the province of Benguela, where he learned about the situation resulting from the floods caused by the collapse of the Cavaco river protection dike.<\/b><\/p>\n

At the Military Air Terminal, he received greetings from the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperanc\u0327a da Costa, and other senior officials of the Angolan State.<\/p>\n

In the province of Benguela, after his arrival, the President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, accompanied by Governor Manuel Nunes Ju\u0301nior, flew over the affected areas by helicopter to obtain an overview of the tragedy.<\/p>\n

He then went, accompanied by several State entities, to the new Camping compound, in the municipality of Navegantes, where he visited the temporary shelter, where more than 4,000 families are resettled.<\/p>\n

At the location, the Head of State was informed about the accommodation conditions of the injured families, as well as the process of locating children who went missing during the floods, in an action carried out by the National Children’s Institute (INAC), with the support of the Angolan Red Cross.<\/p>\n

Still within the framework of this displacement, it evaluated the emergency works to replace the containment dike on the left bank of the Cavaco River to minimize the risk of new floods, especially in the neighborhoods adjacent to the riverbed.<\/p>\n

The work, which began on Monday, is being carried out by the consortium Omatapalo and Casais Angola, in the \u201cSeta Antiga\u201d neighborhood, considered the epicenter of last Sunday’s floods, which devastated the city of Benguela and surrounding areas, after the collapse of around 300 meters of the dike on the left bank of the Cavaco River.<\/p>\n

These unprecedented floods in Benguela left 18 dead, 11 missing and around twenty thousand people displaced, especially in the neighborhoods of Seta, Ilha, Calomanga, Condule, Cotel, Calomburaco, Santa Teresa, Compa\u0303o, Massangarala, Quioxe and Tchipiandalo.<\/p>\n

In addition to the point being attended to, the emergency works must extend to other critical areas already identified, such as the dike on the right bank, which could create flooding situations in riverside neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

Afterwards, President Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o chaired a meeting of the National Civil Protection Commission, at the National Archaeological Center, where a detailed approach to the situation was made and support and assistance to the victims were assessed.<\/p>\n

Last Sunday (12), the protective dike on the left bank of the Cavaco River collapsed, due to the rains that hit the region, causing unprecedented flooding in several neighborhoods in the city of Benguela.<\/p>\n
