“The individual responsible for the attack the day before yesterday, Hadi Mattar, has been formally charged with attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault,” Chautauqua County Attorney General Jason Schmidt said in a statement.

“He was indicted on these charges last night and held without bail,” the statement added.

British writer Salman Rushdie, author of the controversial ‘Satanic Verses’ and the target of a death sentence for more than 30 years, was hooked up to a ventilator after he was stabbed on Friday in New York state.
