Africa-Press – Botswana. The United Kingdom today approved the world’s first vaccine against the Ómicron variant of the Sars Cov2 virus, which causes the Covid-19 disease.

Cited by RFI, Moderna’s CEO, Stéphane Bancel, underlined “the important role” that could be “played by the new generation” of vaccines in protecting against Covid-19.

The UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) reported that the new vaccine “complies with the parameters of safety, quality and efficacy” and that “side effects are “typically mild” and “similar to those observed in the original vaccines against the disease”.

According to the press, which quotes the Financial Times, “although the vaccine has been authorized for people over 18, it is expected that, in an initial phase, it will be administered to people over 50 years of age and to people with a higher clinical risk of complications due to Covid-19.”

The UK is one of the most affected countries in Europe, with almost 180,000 deaths due to the pandemic.
