UN starts permanent mission at Zaporijia nuclear power plant

Africa-Press – Botswana. The permanent mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had this Monday (5) at the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporijia with two permanent members, after six other specialists who carried out inspections in recent days left the site.”The members of the IAEA mission have left the nuclear plant, leaving two people as observers,” Vladimir Rogov, a member of the Ukrainian province’s pro-Russian council, told Komosomolskaya Pravda radio.

The head of the pro-Russian administration of the city of Energodar, which is home to the nuclear power plant, Alexander Volga, confirmed the news to Russian news agency Interfax, noting that the inspectors “will be in charge of controlling the safety of the operation of the nuclear power plant”.

“As indicated by the mission itself and by you [IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, the inspectors must stay permanently and will be changed periodically. He has fulfilled his promise that the mission will be permanent,” added Volga.

According to the pro-Russian politician, “at the moment, only one reactor is operating”, supplying power to the electricity grid, including for Ukrainian customers.

“Due to the repair of the high voltage lines, it was decided to stop one reactor and leave the other in operation”, explained Volga, noting that the second reactor will be put into operation when the repair of the high voltage lines is completed.

Volga added that at the moment the radiological situation around the plant is normal.

Russia and Ukraine have been accused of attacks on the Zaporijia factory for weeks.

Faced with rising tensions around the nuclear plant, the IAEA sent a delegation headed by Grossi to analyze the situation there.

On Tuesday, Grossi will report to the UN Security Council on his mission in Zaporijia.
