Africa-Press – Botswana. President Hage Geingob will depart on Thursday, 8 September, to attend the Inaugural Session of the Namibia/Botswana Bi-National Commission (BNC), which will take place on Friday, 9 September, in the capital of Botswana, Gaborone.
Geingob was invited by the President of the Republic of Botswana, Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi to attend the high-level bilateral platform.
The Namibian presidency said that the BNC replaced the Joint Commission on Cooperation and the Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security (JPCDS) between Namibia and Botswana.
The objective of the BNC is to review cooperation in a wide range of areas. This includes diplomatic, legal, economic, social and defence and security as well as exchange views on issues of mutual interest and concern at the regional and multilateral level.
This comes after it was agreed during the 6th Session of Namibia and Botswana Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC) that Botswana would host the Inaugural Session of the BNC, which follows the signing of an agreement between Namibia and Botswana regarding the establishment of a Bi-National Commission on 29 January 2021.
“Namibia and Botswana enjoy mutual bilateral relations and will continue to strengthen the strong bonds of friendship and fruitful cooperation,” the Namibian presidency shared in a statement.
According to the presidency, the mutual bilateral relationship between Namibia and Botswana has also culminated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding on the implementation of a dry port facility at Walvis Bay in Namibia.
“On the margins of the BNC, as Chairperson of the SADC Organ Troika, President Geingob will hold consultations with the Executive Secretary of SADC to set the agenda for Namibia’s tenure,” the presidency added.
