Interpol: Financial and computer crimes are top threats

Africa-Press – Botswana. Financial and computer crimes are the main criminal threats in the world, but they are also the ones that will grow the most in the next three to five years, said Interpol, this Wednesday, in a statement.

Money laundering is the “number 1” threat, the international criminal police agency (Interpol) said in the note, when explaining the results of a survey of police in the 195 member countries, further indicating that 67% of the nations consider “high” or “very high” risk.

The use of computer programs to perform “ransomware” blackmail ranks second, as it is also rated as “high” or “very high” risk by 66% of members. Furthermore, it is the crime that is expected to increase the most in the coming years (72%).

Even more worrying for Interpol is that 62% of respondents anticipate that the sexual exploitation and abuse of children ‘online’ will also top the list, in third place, of criminal threats that will increase the most.

According to Lusa, this forecast is based on the finding that the demand and production of material for child sexual exploitation increased “significantly” during the Covid-19 pandemic.
