Africa-Press – Botswana. Plans are at an advanced stage for awarding of a tender to repair the Semolo water treatment plant that supplies water to Bodibeng and surrounding villages.
Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) Sehithwa sub cluster supervisor, Mr Mokereste Ramontsho at a kgotla meeting addressed by the MP for Ngamiland Mr Caterpillar Hikuama on Monday.
Mr Ramontsho stated that Semolo Plant could not function to its full capacity due to the fact that the other stream was broken.
He said a site visit had already been conducted with potential contractors adding that theaawarding of a tender for the refurbishment of Semolo spiral reverse osmosis treatment plant was impending.
The plant, he said that on its normal functionality could pump 1080 cubic litre a day.
He however noted that currently it pumped 768 cubic litres which resulted in water shortage. Mr Ramontsho said the plant supplied water to Bodibeng, Bothatogo, Kareng, Sehithwa, Toteng and Legothwana.
He however indicated that the supply to Bodibeng was a challenge despite the fact that it was the nearest village to the water plant.
He said that the corporation had engaged a new technician to assess their Geographic Information System on the reticulation to analyse what could cause the deficiency of inflow to Bodibeng.
In his remarks, MP Hikuama briefed that during the 2022 Winter Parliament it was explained that funds would be sourced to refurbish the plant to solve water woes in these villages.
He highlighted that during his consultations with WUC they explained that currently they effected water rationing in these villages to augment shortage.
However he said the corporation had indicated that despite the rationing exercise, Bodibeng still experience water shortage and could go for days without inflow.
MP Hikuama stated that WUC alleged that residents watered their livestock with potable water which resulted in shortage.
He called on people to desist from doing such because if they don’t, water shortage would persist.
Residents explained that Bodibeng, unlike other villages had no borehole or well to water their livestock hence they resorted to water their livestock with potable water.
