Africa-Press – Botswana. Mr Hendricks Jacobs is the chairperson of the newly established Tsabong District Council.
The Bokspits/Struizendam councillor was unopposed during a special full council meeting elections held in Tsabong on Monday.
Former Tsabong Sub-district Council chairperson and Omaweneno/Kisa/Maralaleng councillor, Mr Ronald Baitsewe was also elected deputy council chairperson unopposed.
Tsabong District Council secretary, Mr Mpho Mathe said since the council was newly established, it needed to elect new leaders and committee members.
Accepting the responsibility, Mr Jacobs said they needed to do things differently because ‘it’s a new era, a new beginning’.
He promised to support councillors in their quest to improve service delivery.
He also urged the councillors and officers to work in unity in order to develop the district.
For his part, Cllr Baitsewe said it was critical to deliver on promises made to the electorate.
He called for effective service delivery and promised to mobilise resources to facilitate the process.
Umbrella for Democratic Change and Tsabong South councillor, Mr John Lentshikang was elected Leader of Opposition.
He congratulated the new leadership and pledged to support them.
Specially elected councillor, Mr Nkatlholang Simane was elected the chief whip while councillor for Draaihoek/Makopong, Mr Moses Chimbombi was elected the opposition whip.
The councillors also chose leaders for various council committees.
