Africa-Press – Botswana. The bad state of some internal roads in Gaborone North Constituency is worrisome.
The area legislator, Mr Mpho Balopi told a kgotla meeting at Block 8 kgotla on Wednesday that the Gaborone City Council (GCC) authorities and his office had toured the constituency and agreed that the situation needed attention.
He said some roads needed asphalt resurfacing while boundaries needed to be protected with kerbstones, adding that roads without kerbstones were the most dilapidated.
MP Balopi further said trees and grass growing along the roads edges worsened the situation.
Notwithstanding such, he said the GCC faced financial difficulties due to the dwindling government coffers, hence he pleaded with the constituents to play their part and pay council service levy rates.
That, he said would help the council to service them better, adding that the council banked on funds from government and its own generated funds to roll out services.
Constituents were also informed that government had resolved that the P10m constituency development fund money would be used for internal roads. However, he said the money would be far from enough to deal with the roads problem in the whole constituency.
Still on service delivery issues, the Mr Balopi said waste management was a challenge to the council; as some businesses were failing to honour their litter collection contracts.
Commenting, Mr Fraser Tlhoiwe commended government for coming up with the Transitional National Development Plan (TNDP) and expressed hope that the plan would address some of the projects they had long requested, such as a clinic that would operate 24 hours and a police post.
Another resident, Mr Peter Bagwasi applauded the government for upgrading Gaborone roads, adding that had resulted in reduction of traffic congestion during peak hours.
