Africa-Press – Botswana. Ministry of Health has advised Batswana and residents to use the knowledge gained about COVID-19 over the past three years to protect themselves.
In an interview with BOPA, the ministry’s Chief Public Relations officer, Dr Christopher Nyanga said although all COVID-19 protocols had been relaxed, people should still observe some when they believed that doing so would help safeguard their health.
“This includes putting on masks when joining large crowds or avoiding large crowds when one is able to,” said Dr Nyanga.
He said the ministry would continue keeping an eye on the COVID-19 situation in the country and globally and advise on any new steps to be taken should the need arise.
Meanwhile, Dr Nyanga said the ministry encouraged those who were not yet vaccinated or might not have taken their booster shots, to do so.
He said only 503 354 people had taken their booster shots, which meant that at least one million people had not come forward for the booster.
He also called on parents to allow their children to be vaccinated against COVID-19, to give them the much needed protection against the disease.
Dr Nyanga also pointed out that the District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) continued to conduct COVID-19 vaccination for children aged five to 11 years in schools and any other area where arrangements could be made.
He indicated that the ministry was satisfied with the cooperation that most parents had shown thus far.
He advised that those whose children experienced some unusual symptoms post COVID-19 vaccination, to visit the nearest health facility, without delay.
Dr Nyanga said in the week ending February 10, the ministry recorded 134 COVID-19 cases, adding that infection figures had generally gone down to less than 200 per week.
