Africa-Press – Botswana. Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) director general has been on suspension since June last year.

Responding to a question in Parliament recently, Assistant Minister for State President, Mr Dumezweni Mthimkhulu said while investigations continued, the director general was liable to full pay in compliance with legislative requirements.

“A disciplinary hearing has not been commenced as yet pending investigations,” the assistant minster said.

He indicated that the minister was mandated to prescribe the conditions of service of the directorate, according to Section 5 of the Corruption and Economic Crime Act, adding “the independence of the Directorate extends to its operations and the director general has that independence in terms of the Act.”

Furthermore, Mr Mthimkhulu said Section (42) of the Act provided that the director general would be responsible for the direction and administration of the Directorate, as a public office.

Member of Parliament for Serowe South Mr Leepetswe Lesedi had wanted to know how long the DCEC director general had been on suspension and when the disciplinary hearing would commence. Mr Lesedi also wanted to if the director general was on full pay while on suspension.
