Bull donation initiative bridges wealth gap

Africa-Press – Botswana. The bull donation initiative is instrumental in driving government’s efforts to bridge a gap between the rich and the poor.

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi said this on Friday when donating a Simmental bull to Mr Gareanna Mompati at Gube Khudi cattle post.

Dr Masisi said the bull donation was in line with Vision 2036, which called for ‘prosperity for all,’ noting that the initiative would help elevate the poor’s economic status.

He said the donation team looked for a farmer who had the capability to expand the breed of the donated bull.

The bull, he said, had been tested and was free from diseases, adding it was not from government, but came from the business community and private sector.

The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Fidelis Molao, stated that the bull would expand Mr Mompati’s breed and also improve the quality of meat.

Mr Molao implored the beneficiary to take good care of the bull, adding he was allowed to take 10 of his cattle for artificial insemination at Makoba Quarantine Camp. He gifted him with the stock recording book, dip and feeds.

And Boteti East MP, Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe said the donation initiative was crucial in improving the economic status of farmers.

Mr Lelatisitswe said the donation was an investment that would go a long way in elevating livelihoods.

He pledged to ensure that the bull donation programme prospered in Boteti.

The district agricultural coordinator, Mr Obert Mabutha said Mr Mompati started farming in 1981 with two cows that he inherited from his parents and expanded the stock to 52 cattle.
