Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development employees have been applauded for working hard and going beyond the call of duty during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing employees during a consultative meeting in Serowe on Thursday, permanent secretary (PS), Mr Molefi Keaja, said public servants under his ministry deserved to be commended.
He said they helped communities by responding to their needs despite the lockdowns and curfews.
He noted that some of the employees in his ministry were not social workers, but they went all out to ensure that communities in their areas were assisted.
On other issues, Mr Keaja informed the employees about the upgrading of sub-councils to fully fledged councils.
He said the upgrading was meant to bring services closer to people and to promote citizen participation as well as accountability at the district level.
He urged the employees to work hard to meet public expectations.
On the rationalisation of government portfolios, Mr Keaja said it was necessitated by the need to bring together related services and to create synergies as well consolidate ministry effectiveness.
He said he was on a countywide tour to brief ministry employees on decisions taken and to appreciate their concerns and experiences in the delivery of services.
