Africa-Press – Botswana. The commemoration of the Fallen Heroes Day began on February 27, 2011.
The event was meant to primarily remember the 15 BDF members who were killed during the Lesoma Ambush on February 27,1978 by the Rhodesian regime.
Lesoma Commemoration, as it was called at the time, was held at Extension 14 cemetery, where 15 Lesoma Ambush victims were burried.
Following the initial commemoration, a deliberate decision was taken to also recognise other fallen heroes and heroines who met their untimely death in the line of duty.
The name was then changed to Fallen Heroes Day.
