Africa-Press – Botswana. The newly established Tlokweng District Council (TDC) has elected Lenganeng councillor, Mr Collen Mochotlhi, as its inaugural chairperson.

Councilor Mochotlhi, who was unopposed for the position, was elected during a full council session on Monday.

Councillor Lesego Molefe was elected deputy chairperson.

Mr Mochotlhi, who also chairs Botswana Democratic Party’s national youth executive committee, said he was humbled and honored by the trust of his fellow councillors.

“As council chairperson, I want to express my sincere appreciation to honourable members for the confidence they bestowed upon me and the great responsibility that has been entrusted to me,” he said.

Mr Mochotlhi further told councillors that government, through the Reset Agenda, endeavored for excellence in service delivery, adding this called for intense introspection of how the council conducted its business.

He, however, regretted that the council’s target on implementation status of projects and programmes against the budget provision had been elusive. “We are still challenged in project and programme implementation due to delays in tendering process,” he said.

Mr Mochotlhi further said government had instructed local authorities to strengthen income generation avenues and leverage on public private partnership to address revenue support grant deficiencies.

The acting TDC council secretary, Mr Isaiah Odirile, said government intended to empower local authorities to improve service delivery.

As such, he said Tlokweng District would require the same manpower establishment similar to any fully fledged district council establishment in the country.

Furthermore, Mr h Odirile said the the transition from a sub-district to a fully-fledged district was a process.
