Africa-Press – Botswana. Gaborone City Council (GCC) has continued its efforts to ensure the city’s illumination by installing 378 solar street lights in the Gaborone North constituency.
Officiating at launch of the project in Gaborone yesterday, mayor Mr Austin Abraham, said the installation of street lights in the area would greatly benefit residents.
Mr Abraham said street lights provided safety for pedestrians and drivers, created a sense of order and cleanliness, promoted economic development and improved the quality of life.
“It is for this reason that GCC has vowed to illuminate all parts of the capital city and make public safety our priority,” he said.
He, however, cautioned the public against vandalising the streetlights.
For his part, area MP Mr Mpho Balopi, said the installation of street lights was a welcome development since Gaborone North streets were mostly undeveloped.
“For a long time developments were non-existent and it is pleasing to witness government making positive strides to enhance the quality of lives for citizens,” he said.
Mr Balopi said it was pleasing to be part of the country’s development agenda.
He further encouraged the contractor, Bartz Engineering, to complete the project within budget and within the set time.
Project manager, Mr John Motshega, said the P9.3 million project would commence on April 24 while the completion date is August 23.
“Installation of the street lights will commence in Tsogang, Ledumang, Marang Tsholofelo, Phakalane, Marapoathulwa and Sebele wards,” he stated.
