Africa-Press – Botswana. Government has, in the quest to ensure equitable distribution of policing resources, prioritised construction of police posts and stations with staff housing to improve accessibility to services for a safe and secure Botswana.

This was said by permanent secretary in the Ministry of Defence and Security, Ms Botlhale Makgekgenene at the official handover ceremony of the newly constructed Moshana Police Post recently.

Ms Makgekgenene applauded Kanye North Constituency for having prioritised the project and funded it to completion, amid other competing area demands.

She added that such demonstrates the importance the constituency attached to issues of public security, which remained key to socio-economic development and national prosperity.

“Construction of a police post at Moshana village is a welcome and necessary development that will go a long way in addressing public security as one of the key drivers towards realising Vision 2036 commitments, particularly Pillar 4, which advocates for Governance, Peace and Security,” she said.

She added that the new facility was a necessary step in assisting the police officers in combating the various issues and would also help improve community policing and boost productivity.

“The project will see Moshana community benefiting from the station with modern facilities valued at more than P970 000 and it will also improve the capabilities of officers to carry out their duties in Moshana and surrounding areas,” she added.

Again, she said the ministry would continue to invest sufficiently in police infrastructure and facility development as well as adopt latest technology in law enforcement, including taking full advantage of the government digital transformation programme, with a view to improving accessibility, quality and effectiveness of policing services.

Further, she said since 2018, government had successfully constructed and delivered 28 police posts to communities nationally, adding that seven police posts were currently under construction and expected to be completed before the end of the year.

She thus called on Moshana residents to appreciate the new police post as their property and ensure that it was protected at all cost.

She also urged residents to work with the police by reporting all forms of crimes to facilitate arrest and prosecution of offenders.

She also emphasised the need to strengthen the relationship between the police and the community, which may result in peace and security in the area.

Giving an overview, Kanye District Council secretary, Mr Godimo Garegope said the project was built through Constituency Community Project (CCP) funding at a tune of P970 627.

Mr Garegope said the facility was built within budget by a citizen contractor, Legato Construction and the project was undertaken by the council through the assistance of Botswana Police Service, which provided the design and scope.

He also confirmed that the police post would provide a decent office space for the police to discharge their duties.

It consists of four offices, a holding cell, a kitchen and an ablution.
