Africa-Press – Botswana. Lions Club International has been appreciated for providing support to vulnerable people in communities.
Speaking at the official opening of Multiple District 412 (MD412) convention in Francistown Saturday, Vice President Mr Slumber Tsogwane said for many years members of the Lions club donated towards helping victims of disasters particularly floods.
MD412 comprises of Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Botswana
“On behalf of the President and the people of Botswana and on my own behalf, I would like to express our sincere gratitude towards the efforts that continue to be made by the Lions Clubs in the region,” he said.
Generally, he noted, Lions Club members helped families and communities that were affected by natural disasters by providing them with food, clothing, blankets, and shelter in some cases.
“It is because of your sacrifices and dedication that I am here today to express our appreciation and to encourage you to grow the organisation’s impact within our economy.”
Mr Tsogwane said volunteerism by Lions Club members symbolised the power of humanity, which without the nation would be lacking in fulfilling some of the lifesaving objectives of protecting human dignity.
He urged those who had not yet joined the Lions Club to do so.
“It is also important that I implore the private sector businesses to partner with you to achieve your goals,” said the Vice President.
The theme for this year’s convention is Service from the Heart in the City of All Things Precious.
However, Mr Tsogwane encouraged members to continue to work together as lions and as clubs in the region.
He implored them to work hard and to stay committed to their motto of ‘serving’ and providing help where it was needed within communities.
Lions Club international director, Dr Ahmed Salim Mostafa reminded fellow contemporaries that Lions Club members stood for peace and understanding.
“We unite through kindness to serve those in need.”
He said since they began Lionism in Africa back in 1953, their clubs had been in places where individuals joined to give their valuable time and effort to improving communities and the world.
Dr Mostafa said Lions Club international was the largest service organisation in the world, with 1.4 million members serving locally and globally to help tackle some of the biggest challenges facing humanity.
As Lions, he said, they held themselves to the absolute highest standard in everything they did.
“Our members and clubs are dedicated to serving others and to improving their lives, and that positions us as the champions of kindness in our communities,” he said.
