Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana Police Service’s Sergeant Edwin Tshelane based at Nlapkhwane Police post has been recognised for his outstanding work performance illustrated by his responsiveness in the fight against crime.
Working under difficult conditions with limited resources, Sergeant Tshelane is said to have made sacrifices by going the extra mile using his private vehicle in police work. He is also credited for reviving the village’s crime prevention committees and establishing new ones.
Minister of Defence and Security Mr Kagiso Mmusi and Kgosi Bokani Mudongo of Nlaphkwane showered Sergeant Tshelane with praises during the minister’s kgotla meeting in Nlapkhwane on Tuesday.
Minister Mmusi also issued Nlaphkwane Police post with a vehicle and recommended that Sergeant Tshelane be elevated for his outstanding service over the past years.
He said it was pleasing to have officers like Sergeant Tshelane who went beyond the call of duty, adding that government recognised the sacrifices police officers made to protect the lives and property of people.
“Officers of Sergeant Tshelane’s calibre should be commended. We know that fighting crime is very difficult. On behalf of my ministry and the people of Nlaphkwane, I want to say a personal thank you for your dedication and for your service,” he said.
Kgosi Mudongo said Sergeant Tshelane worked hard to ensure that crime prevention committees such as community policing and farmer’s committee, all geared towards fighting crime were active in his policing area.
He even addressed crime prevention meetings, coming up with ways of fighting crime in the village. He went beyond what other police officers did in the past,” Kgosi Mudongo said.
Kgosi Modongo, however, decried lack of accommodation for police officers, saying most of the officers posted in the village rented houses whilst some commuted from other villages.
He also requested office accommodation for the police post especially that some cases such as those of gender based violence (GBV), required confidentiality.
He said Sergeant Tshelane, as the police post station commander shared the available office space with his juniors which compromised confidentiality.
Giving a vote of thanks, Member of Parliament for Tati West, Mr Simon Moabi apprised residents about the developments that would be undertaken under the Constituency Community Projects.
The project, he said, included the tarring of the six-kilometre gravel road that connects Kgari village to Mapoka village up to the main kgotla.
He said the project was not part of the Tshesebe-Masunga access road. He said Batanani junior secondary school was also under major maintenance to remedy the dilapidated structures.
Mr Moabi also donated a wheelchair to Mr Simani Gulu of Nlaphkwane who is living with a disability.
