Africa-Press – Botswana. Cabinet ministers are expected to fulfill the objectives of their annual performance plans in order to guide their ministries to offer quality service delivery to citizens, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has said.

Signing performance contracts with ministers Mr Karabo Gare and Ms Philda Kereng of entrepreneurship, environment and tourism respectively as well as Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Talita Monnakgotla, he said the agreement was indicative of what the ministers planned to achieve over the financial year ending March 31 next year.

Promises made in the contract should not be breached, he stated.

Mr Gare said he would focus on the coordination and development of citizen-owned enterprises, value chain development, implementation of Citizen Inclusion Act as well as review and development of policies and laws to facilitate the growth of businesses.

He said he had learnt from countries such as Germany an effective model of how good legislation and policies for facilitating strong small and medium enterprises could be successfully implemented.

Ms Kereng said for her, the focus would be on improving high value tourism and environmental protection.

She said her ministry would facilitate tourism through improving processes such as licensing and compliance to tourism marketing standards.

In addition, the ministry would ensure improved citizen participation in the tourism industry and its value chains through access to resources such as land and promoting joint ventures, she said adding that a meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions strategy aimed at boosting the tourism and business value Botswana derived from hosting international events would be implemented.

Ms Monnakgotla on the other hand said her focus areas would be ensuring that government policies and programmes reached and benefitted remote areas on time and that rural-based businesses flourished.

The assistant minister said she would also oversee a drive to ensure that rural and remote areas were cleaner.
