Africa-Press – Botswana. Gumare residents have requested for more council wards.
Currently Gumare has only two council wards being Gumare-Tubu North and Gumare-Tubu South and the residents want another council ward which would make Tubu an independent council ward while Gumare remained with two being Gumare north and Gumare south.
The residents’representative Mr Kesegohetse Sethwara made the request during the Ngami constituency demarcation consultative meeting which was held in Gumare recently.
Mr Sethwara said the population of both Gumare and Tubu was over 12000 and argued that it could be divided into three.
Another resident representative Mr Tshenyegelo Bonang said that the current Gumare-Tubu could be divided into Gumare central, north and south.
Mr Elisha Muti said that Matsaudi and Phase 1 wards could supplement the Tubu population to form the additional council ward.
Another resident Mr Motlamedi Moqwa said that Gumare as the district headquarters and with its high population deserved an additional council ward.
In her welcome remarks, the Ngami Constituency demarcation committee chairperson Ms Tumelo Chibua said that the committee was consulting communities for recommendations which would help divide ward councils and polling stations.
Ms Chibua observed that the demarcation exercise followed the delimitation recommendations which led to an additional constituency in the Okavango area to have Okavango West, East and Ngami.
She said that council wards in Ngami for 2023 should have a population of about 4465 and polling station to have at least 30 to 1000 voters.
Ms Chibua said that some of the factors that were considered for the exercise were population, and cultural beliefs.
