Africa-Press – Botswana. The Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services (DISS) has noted concerns from the media, both local and international as well as from the general public concerning the recent investigations involving journalists from Mmegi newspaper.

A press release from the Directorate’s public relations unit says that the DISS carried out the said investigations on reasonable suspicions that the two journalists in question had conducted themselves in a manner contravening the Intelligence and Security Services Act.

“The Directorate however, regrets that in the process of its investigations, an impression was created that it sought to interfere with the work of journalists and does not appreciate the role of the media in a democracy,” it reads.

The press release says that the directorate wished to assure the public that it had always regarded the media as an important stakeholder, hence the reason it always worked to facilitate good working relations with journalists and the media bodies.

The intelligence agency further indicated that it welcomed the feedback and that it will always be amenable to dialogue that is in the best interest of democracy and national security.
