Africa-Press – Botswana. Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) trainers in brigades and technical colleges are recruited through the normal process of recruitment in line with public service policies and procedures.
Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Douglas Letsholathebe, said candidates being considered for recruitment for the same vacancy at the same time were subjected to the same process.
He said candidates were sourced from the unemployed database at the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC).
He said the process followed was that qualifying candidates for a particular vacancy in a specific year were extracted from the database then contacted to submit their curriculum vitae, educational certificates as well as transcripts.
Dr Letsholathebe said the process would be concluded with the appointment of candidates who had performed better in the interview.
He said out of the 691 lecturers employed in the brigades, only 58 did not have post graduate certificates or a Certificate in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET).
However, Dr Letsholathebe said 16 of the said 58 officers were currently admitted at Francistown College of Technical Vocational Education (FCTVE) and were awaiting commencement of studies in August 2023.
He said there were 234 TVET trainers in the four technical colleges out of which 88 were without post graduate certificates or diploma in technical and vocational education.
“The ministry is committed to capacitate these trainers with the teaching qualification,” he said.
Dr Letsholathebe said nine trainers were employed on contract in brigades, three trainers were employed on contract terms in the four technical colleges, two of which were at Gaborone Technical College (GTC) while one was at Oodi College of Applied Arts and Technology (OCAAT).
He said the other two trainers at GTC were in electrical and electronic engineering and hair dressing and beauty therapy while the one at OCAAT was in jewellery and manufacturing.
Currently, Dr Letsholathebe said, there was one expatriate trainer employed on contract in the brigades while the other three expatriate trainers at the technical colleges were employed on contract terms.
He said the Department of Skills Development has not centralised job seekers database of qualified TVET trainers and that instead the prospective employees were sourced from the unemployed database at HRDC.
Ghanzi North MP, Mr John Thiite had asked the minister to update Parliament on the processes of recruitment and placement of TVET trainers in brigades and technical colleges.
He also asked the minister to state the number of TVET trainers without post graduate certificates or diploma in technical and vocational education in all brigades and technical colleges under his ministry as well as the number of TVET trainers who were employed on contract.
Mr Thiite also wanted to establish the number of expatriate TVET trainers as well as whether the Department of Skills Development had centralised job seekers database of qualified TVET trainers.
