Africa-Press – Botswana. The collaboration between Botswana’s agricultural sector and the Texas A&M AgriLife Research University from the United States of America will go a long way in improving agricultural output in Botswana.

Minister of Agriculture, Mr Fidelis Molao said on Monday during a courtesy call by the visiting delegation from the Texas A&M Agrilife Research University that Texas A&M Agrilife Research University was advanced and the country stood a chance to benefit from its research and collaborations and ultimately develop the country’s agricultural sector.

“We are happy that they are following on the previous discussions we had on areas of cooperation and partnership,” he said, further noting that the visit would cement the relationship between Botswana and the Texas State.

Minister Molao said the Texas A&M Agrilife Research University delegation’s visit was a testament of the fruitful outcome of President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi’s external trips.

He said of recent, Botswana imported livestock from Texas State, which created both positive and negative feedback.

The director of Texas A&M Agrilife Research University, Dr Cliff Lamb said they were excited about the opportunity presented by collaborating with Botswana, adding that they had done some works in Southern Africa but not in Botswana.

“Agriculture is becoming more global and having relationships around the world helps us to grow,” Dr Lamb said.

He highlighted that there were tremendous opportunities in the country, which they were interested in such as livestock production.

However, he said their main strategic areas were development of new technologies for agriculture, sustainable production, economic strength of their tasks and health for both livestock and humans.

Dr Lamb said at the end of their week long visit in the country, there should be a schedule of action items, adding that the agreement between Botswana and Texas State would not be beneficial unless opportunities were exploited.

While in the country, Texas A&M Agrilife Research University delegation will meet other stakeholders and researchers.

Dr Lamb will also officially open the national agriculture show on Friday at Sebele Show Ground.
