Africa-Press – Botswana. Members of the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) are receiving training on urban combat leadership. The course is conducted by the United States Security Forces Assistance Brigade Training Team.

The course, which will run for six months, is expected to capacitate and empower the BDF’s Ground Forces Command to have effective skills and be efficient upon deployment for urban combat missions.

United States Ambassador to Botswana, Mr Howard Van Vranken told BOPA after the training programme’s official opening held at Eastern Military Garrison on Monday that the training was a result of the United States’ long partnership with Botswana, and would not only benefit this country, but the entire region as well.

He said the US and Botswana have a close relationship based on shared values.“Both Botswana and the United States believe in the rule of law, respect for human rights, and democratic institutions,” he said.

Mr Vranken explained that the two parties also recently hosted the security climate symposium to find solutions to climate change which posed a serious threat to security.

Commander of Ground Forces Command, Major General Joseph Seelo, underscored the importance of the course for the personnel under his command.

He stated that since the COVID-19 pandemic had forced cessation of training activities, this course would assist the BDF personnel to catch up and complement for the skills loss that occurred because of inactivity during the pandemic.

The course coordinator, Major Boiki Selepeng, said BDF was grateful for the opportunity to learn from the United States military, which had a wealth of knowledge, technological expertise, and experience gained from many operational missions.
