Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana hopes to use the upcoming World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Committee for Africa (RC73) session to showcase her healthcare success story and to also learn from her peers in areas where they may be doing better.

The historic meeting, a collaboration between government and WHO Botswana country office. The President, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, will officially open the session billed for GICC on Monday until Sept. 1.

The session will attract 47 ministers of health across the African region.

In an interview on Wednesday, Ministry of Health and Wellness Chief Public Relations Officer, Dr Christopher Nyanga, said preparations for the much anticipated session were currently in full swing to ensure a successful event.

“Different organising committees are assigned in areas of procurement and logistics, protocol and security, transport, health services, communications and public relations, finance and information technology among others,” he explained.

He said the health facilities were also ready to assist in the event any of the visitors required health services.

Drawing from Botswana’s experience in successfully hosting major events such as the recent US-Africa summit, Dr Nyanga emphasised the country’s capacity in terms of accommodation, transportation, infrastructure, and information technology to ensure the successful execution of RC73.

“More than 500 participants are expected to attend the summit and others from different parts of the world will virtually participate through the Zoom platform,” he explained.

He also indicated that the five-day session would be an all-inclusive meeting to cater for everyone including people living with disabilities.

Dr Nyanga also said health minister, Dr Edwin Dikoloti was set to assume the chairpersonship of the WHO Africa Region at the meeting and was expected to hold the position for a year — until the next regional committee meeting.

“We are hopeful that the summit will be an opportunity to learn from other stakeholders and find ways to continuously enhance the local health system for the benefit of our citizens,” he said.

Resolutions to be made during the summit would determine the location for the next meeting.
