Africa-Press – Botswana. The First Lady, Ms Neo Masisi, will be the chief walker at the 73rd session of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Committee for Africa dubbed Walk the Talk to sensitise people on Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) that continues to affect lives.
The First Lady will on Sunday join the multitude of WHO delegates that have gathered in Botswana, for the WHO Regional Committee 73 conference that will take place in Gaborone from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1.
In an interview on Wednesday the Ministry of Health spokesperson, Dr Christopher Nyanga, said the five-kilometer walk from Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) to a point to be announced was a way to encourage Batswana and nations at large to adopt the culture of walking to keep fit and healthy. He said in line with the walking for health approach, the Minister of Health, Dr Edwin Dikoloti, launched the Walk for life campaign in 2022, and Batswana were encouraged to walk at least 10 000 steps per day in an effort fight NCDs.
Dr Nyanga said cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory diseases, type 2 diabetes, several cancers and mental health conditions were very prevalent in Botswana, adding that those diseases as well as other NCDs were mainly exacerbated by unhealthy diets and physical inactivity.
He said the ministry advised Batswana to take personal responsibility for their health among others, eating healthy, engaging in physical activity and most importantly adopt a culture of walking and physical exercise in general.
The ‘Walk the Talk’ would will start at 08:00 and all Batswana are encouraged to take part.
