Africa-Press – Botswana. Moiyabana residents in the Serowe South constituency have been urged to participate in independence celebrations in large numbers to show patriotism.

The area MP, Mr Leepetswe Lesedi told residents when addressing a kgotla meeting on September 27 that it would be amiss for them to miss out on President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi’s independence message as it would be conveyed at the kgotla.

He said the celebrations gave Batswana the opportunity to reminisce about the past and shape the future.

He also encouraged residents to uphold five national principles of Botho, Democracy, Development, Self-reliance and Unity, saying they had been paramount in the country’s development.

Mr Leepetswe, however, said as the country celebrated its 57th independence anniversary, it was imperative to respond to challenges that were impeding residents to live decent lives.

He reminded thnem that the celebrations did not give people the right to do as they pleased and further implored residents to celebrate peacefully.

On other issues, the MP expressed concern over substance and drug abuse among the youth.

He said such drugs were peddled by elders who were now destroying the future of the youth.

He said the issue of stock theft required concerted efforts from the community through whistle blowing and giving evidence in stock theft cases.

He said the police relied on information from members of the public to make leads.

For his part, Kgosi Mokopakgomo Kgomokgwana of Moiyabana expressed concern of unbecoming behaviour from the youth, noting that it was fueled by the use of habit-forming drugs.

He also expressed concern at the soaring stock theft cases in his area of jurisdiction.

He concurred with the area MP that it was imperative for residents to attend independence celebrations in large numbers.
