Africa-Press – Botswana. The Poverty Eradication Programme is still operational and achieving its set mandate of improving the livelihoods of the poor through the establishment of sustainable income generating projects. Minister of Entrepreneurship, Mr Karabo Gare told Parliament that the programme had since been transferred from the Ministry for State President to his ministry and renamed Wealth Creation Programme.

Minister Gare said since 2019, 305 beneficiaries had graduated from the programme, while 5 207 had been registered as beneficiaries. He said the increase was reflective of favourable action in identifying people who require and could be given assistance within the greater scope of improving social protection for all citizens.

He said the total number of people funded under the programme since inception in Gaborone was 2 071 with 583 from Gaborone North constituency. Gaborone North MP, Mr Mpho Balopi had asked the minister to state if the Poverty Eradication Programme was still operational and achieving the set mandate. He also wanted to know the number of people across Botswana who have graduated from poverty between June 2019 to date compared to how many more have been registered as beneficiaries.
