This was said by Mr Innocent Chingwaru, the chairperson of the summit, and also that of Botswana Chapter of Corp Security International, while speaking at a press conference to officially launch the Botswana Security and Fire Summit in Gaborone.

Mr Chingwaru said the summit, scheduled to take place from February 28 to March 1, 2024, sought to address the challenges faced by the security sector in Botswana.

“In a world where challenges are ever evolving, it becomes imperative for us to unite and foster collaboration to ensure safety and security for our people and nation.”

Mr Chingwaru said the theme for this summit; A Collaborative Approach for a Safe and Secure Nation, underscored the significance of partnership and cooperation among various stakeholders.

“It is a call to action, inviting us to join hands in addressing the complex and dynamic challenges that affect the security infrastructure,” he said.

He revealed that the summit would take place over three days with speakers drawn from various institutions to share their expertise in the field of security and fire safety.

Among our notable speakers are Professor Tachilisa Balule, Acting Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Botswana, Ms Laone Motseonageng, the Risk and Quality Assurance Assistant Analyst at the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA) and Mr Gregory Kealotswe, the chairperson of the Security Association of Botswana.

Mr Tshenolo Ratshosa, the Chief Inspector and Licensing Officer in the Ministry of Defence and Security, said it was important for the security sector to be cognisant of legal instruments that govern their industry and the ministry views the upcoming summit as a welcome occasion for exchanging knowledge.

He said government, through his ministry, sought to professionalise the security sector, to ensure that event planners assess and have contingency plans for different types of risks such as the potential for fire outbreak, public health risks, crowd control measures and others.

Mr Ratshosa added that they sought to guide private security firms to operate through international best practice, and private security guards to reach a state of being well trained on aspects such as risk assessment and management.
