Africa-Press – Botswana. Masunga police are investigating a fatal road accident, which claimed lives of five people, among them a one-year-old girl in Masunga.

Superintendent Raymond Gabothulwe said the accident occurred about 200 meters into Masunga from Vukwi at around 520pm.

The accident involved a Toyota Blade car with 3 occupants including the driver and a VW Golf with 4 passengers and a driver.

Superintendent Raymond Gabothulwe said preliminary investigations revealed that the VW Golf driver had miscalculated and overtook not realising that the oncoming vehicle (Toyota Blade) was near, which led to a head-on crash.

“The victims were rushed to Masunga Primary Hospital where both drivers, one-year-old daughter to the Toyota Blade driver and a 21-year-old man were certified dead,” he said.

Three other occupants were transferred to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital whereupon arrival a male passenger from the VW Golf was also confirmed dead.

At the time of writing, the bodies were still at the 2 hospitals awaiting postmortem.

Supt. Raymond Gabothulwe noted that a 12-year-old boy, who lost his mother and sister in the accident was in a stable condition having sustained head injuries and fractured right leg.

He said a 23-year-old man who was travelling in the VW Golf was admitted at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital with head injuries while a 26-year-old lady who was a passenger in the Toyota Blade was admitted at Masunga Primary Hospital, both in stable condition.

He advised motorists to drive at regulated speed, avoid taking alcohol while driving and always obey road signs. He also advised drivers to rest and travel later when feeling tired as fatigue contributes to accidents.

In Tshesebe, Acting Station Commander, Assistant Superintendent Motlamedi George reported that a 58-year-old Night Watchman at Themashanga Clinic was found dead. It is suspected that he was hit by an object on the head.

ASP George said three middle aged men were arrested and were assisting police with investigations regarding the matter.

He said there was a break-in at the clinic and some goods were recovered.

In Mabudzane, a middle aged woman was found dead in her bedroom and investigations were still ongoing to determine the cause of death.
